The artist feeds AI program prompts to get images that match the art direction/layout, then figure out what works and what doesn't. After picking parts of the AI-generated images, they pop 'em into Photoshop to nail down the composition.
From there, they draw a frame or a comp based on their "freshly-bashed" (a term for combining different reference images) creation. *Not all of the images here are 100% AI-generated.*
Sometimes an artist can get a background or part of one pretty fast with AI, but for poses, clothing, expressions, and angles, good old stock images are the way to go.
